Brite Chapel and Women’s History Month

March 1, 2010

Dear Friends,

This March marks the 30th anniversary of the National Women’s History Project, an educational nonprofit organization whose mission is to recognize and celebrate the diverse and historic accomplishments of women. As part of Brite’s observance of Women’s History Month, our services of worship will celebrate and explore the many ways that God has called and continues to call women to Christian ministry, acknowledging their many historic accomplishments, the ways in which the Church has affirmed (and denied) God’s calling of women, and the continued struggle for justice and recognition within ministry today. Part of this celebration of vocation and women answering the call will include three unique perspectives as our worship services will be led by three prominent women of faith.

Tomorrow begins our celebration, and our first service will feature the Rev. ClayOla Gitane as the celebrant of an Episcopal Eucharist as she leads us in our worship of God through sermon and sacrament. She will be leading us in the celebration of the Feast of St. Chad as well as sharing her experiences and perspectives as an ordained Episcopal priest. The service will honor the rich musical and liturgical tradition of the Episcopal Church and the Book of Common Prayer and will explore the ways in which God is working today within the universal church and invites all to the Table.

Other featured preachers for the month include the Rev. Dani Loving Cartwright (Regional Minister and President of the Christian Church D.O.C. in the Southwest) and Dr. Keri Day (Asst. Prof. of Theological and Social Ethics and Dir. of Black Church Studies at Brite Divinity School).

Our celebration tomorrow promises to be rich in blessing and will call us to the challenging and rewarding task of embodying the radical inclusivity of God’s love. Please make plans to attend and come celebrate with us. All are invited.

Soli Deo Gloria,

Rev. Michael N. Riggs
