Dear students, partners and friends,

The World Student Christian Federation -North America (WSCF-NA) is one of the proud sponsors of Ecumenical Advocacy Days (EAD). Like in previous years, we would like to have a Student Christian Movement (SCM) USA/WSCF-NA delegation there. The WSCF will also participate in planning the young adults track at EAD and scholarships are available for young adults (35 and younger) to attend the event.

If you are interested in participating in EAD or in obtaining a scholarship please let Shantha Ready (shantha.ready[at]gmail[dot]com) and/or I know.

This is an amazing opportunity to meet and network with other justice minded people, to learn advocacy skills and to actually advocate first-hand on Capitol Hill on issues of economic justice! For more information about EAD, please look athttp://advocacydays.org/

Looking forward to hearing from you

Students, Friends and Partners,

our partners at the Presbyterian Church (USA) have asked us to promote their Young Adult Volunteer (YAV) Program:

The Young Adult Volunteer (YAV) program is a year-long service and learning programthrough the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). Volunteers are placed with partner agencies in one of 16 sites in the U.S. and around the world. Regardless of the location, every site group focuses on spiritual growth, living simply in community, mission partnerships, leadership development, and vocational discernment. There are placements with a variety of churches and organizations working for God’s call to peace, justice, and wholeness for all creation. Mission service and learning opportunities include children/youth ministry, education, women’s ministry and advocacy, community non-profit agencies, environmental justice, social action organizations, disaster assistance, urban ministry, and more.

To learn more about the YAV program:

o visit our website,

o read blogs and profiles of currently-serving YAV, and descriptions of our sites.

o learn how to apply and sign up for the YAV inquirers google groupto receive updates.

o like our Facebook page for updates and discussions.

The application deadlines areJanuary 20 for international service and April 20 for service in the U.S. Applicants do not have to be Presbyterian.

After their year of service, YAVs have a better understanding of the connection between their lives, and those of brothers and sisters around the world. They are able to use their cross-cultural skills in a variety of vocations including law, non-profit leadership, education, healthcare, and church work (both ordained and non-ordained). YAVs form life-long relationships with the community in which they serve, as well as other volunteers with whom they serve.

Our partners at the General Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church have asked us to spread information for young adults to apply to serve as US-2s and Mission Interns. Applications are due Feb 5, 2012. These programs are open to the ecumenical family. Following is a letter by UMC Global Ministries’ General Secretary Thomas Kemper, an article about the program and information about the application process.

Best!

Luciano

Dear Partners,

For 60 years, Global Ministries has been sending young people into service. Through the US-2 and mission intern programs, we have enriched the lives of thousands of young men and women, and through their witness touched uncountable youth, adults, and communities. The US-2 and mission intern programs develop church leaders, as young people work in communities that face issues such as poverty, racism, or environmental justice.

US-2s serve two years living out faith through social justice in the United States. They live, work, and make a positive impact working with a United Methodist partner organization, boldly reexamining their role and participation in society to address systemic injustice. Mission interns integrate the global and local by serving for three years, approximately half of the time in an international community and half in their home country. They respond to the prophetic voice of communities and individuals working for systemic change around the world, walking the path of justice, mercy, and love.

The deadline for the 2012 class of mission interns and US-2s is February 5. Please share the application with those in your networks and communities between the ages of 20 and 30 throughout our global connection, who are committed to addressing the root causes of injustice. The application is available here:

http://new.gbgm-umc.org/connections/youth/applications/

Mission interns and US-2s are encouraged to engage in disciplined theological reflection and are equipped to discern God’s calling for their lives. Thank you for partnering with us in shaping ethical, prophetic Christian leaders who are engaged firsthand in God’s mission in a world of injustice and need.

In mission and ministry together,

Thomas Kemper

Consider becoming a US-2 or Mission Intern. If you are between the ages of 20 to 30 and feel called to address the root causes of injustice so that the gospel is lived out alongside communities and organizations seeking peace and systemic transformation, apply to become a United Methodist US-2 or Mission Intern.

US-2s serve in the United States for two years. Mission Interns serve for three years, approximately half of the time abroad and half of the time in their home country. Both US-2s and Mission Interns commit to linking their faith to justice.

The due date for applications is February 5, 2012. In 2011, 25 young adults were commissioned as US-2s and Mission Interns. The General Board of Global Ministries has renewed its commitment to increase the number of new people serving in new places as United Methodist mission workers and volunteers in the United States and around the world. The new class of missionaries will begin their training and placement in the summer of 2012.

Where do missionaries serve?

The settings may vary from Jerusalem, Palestine/Israel, to Memphis, Tennessee, US, but they are always in connection with a United Methodist-partner organization, faith community, or institution. Some may be called to work in an urban setting with labor organizers; others may work with children in a daycare center; some may help advocate for families in transitional housing.

All settings are places of hope, requiring solidarity, openness, and Christian love. The overarching Global Ministries philosophy of mission stems from the reality that missionaries serve with, not to or for others. The work of a missionary is one of solidarity and accompaniment.

Are missionaries paid?

Both types of young adult missionaries–US-2s and Mission Interns–receive a small monthly stipend. They live and work in solidarity with communities that face systemic issues of injustice.

Missionaries commit to linking faith and justice. Young adults have the opportunity to live out their faith through justice ministries, connect to networks, raise awareness, transform communities, and become a part of a community through presence and solidarity.

Who can apply to become a Mission Intern?

Beginning in 2011, Global Ministries began commissioning Mission Interns on an annual basis. This commitment to young people globally is one way that the mission agency seeks to increase opportunities for the larger church to engage in mission.

The Mission Intern program is open to all young adults throughout the connection, including non-US-based participants. So someone from the Philippines or the Ukraine would be able to participate in the program. (Fluency in English is necessary as trainings are held in English.)

How do young adults apply?

Download more information and an application to become a Mission Intern or US-2.

How can my organization host a US-2 or Mission Intern?

Brown University’s Religious Studies Department presents:
Authenticity, Origins, and Authority
in the Practice and Study of Religion
A Graduate Student Conference
March 16-18, 2012
Keynote Address delivered by Bruce Lincoln, University of Chicago

Notions of authority, claims to authenticity, and appeals to origins are
intimately related concepts deployed in both the practice and study of religion. The
relationship between these concerns is complex, however, and varies widely within
religious thought, religious practice, and academic discourse on religion. Scholars have
long studied, for example, the ways in which notions of the “original” or “authentic” are
used to authorize religious ideologies, both among ancient and modern practitioners.
With the rise of secularism, increasing attention has also been given to studying the ways
in which authenticity itself serves as an authorizing force, as individuals and groups
attempt to define meaningful existence through appeals to “authentic” sources of
“authority,” be they gods, society, or the individual. And finally, this nexus of concerns
manifests itself in the works of academics themselves: sometimes assertions of “authentic
traditions” and “original meaning” creep into scholarly discourse on the study of religion.

This conference aims to probe the multiform connections between notions of
authenticity, origins, and authority among religious actors as well as within academic
discourse on religion. We invite papers from a wide variety of disciples within the
university that seek to explore the variegated relationships between these concepts,
considered through the lenses of religions studied and the scholars who study them.

Possible topics may include, but are not limited to:

• claims to authenticity and authority in the invention of religious practices
• divine origins and other kinds of authenticating claims
• the role of secularization in claims to authenticity
• authenticity in modern moral philosophy (authenticity, “the self” and ethical
formation)
• religious praxis through media (e.g. cyberpilgrimage) and issues of authenticity
• classifications of religious writings as authentic and inauthentic, and concomitant appeals to origins
• differentiations between canonicity and authenticity
• manuscript variations among religious texts and related discussions of
authenticity, origins, and authority
• deployment of gender categories in discourses about authenticity and origins
• authenticity and ideologies of power
• analyses of the ubiquity of strategies involving claims to the authentic and
original
• apocalyptic and future-oriented authenticating claims among religious groups
• issues of authentication and religious actors’ attempts to construct religious space

Please submit a 250 word abstract for a 15-20 minute paper by November 30, 2011 to
Brown.Religion.Conference.2012[at]gmail.com. Proposals should include the title of the
paper, the presenter’s name, institutional and departmental affiliation, and any technology
requests. Responses will be sent out by December 20, 2011.

Please join us for a new workshop for Spiritual Directors. The goal of Spiritual Direction is spiritual formation – the ever-increasing capacity to live a spiritual life from the heart. The spiritual life cannot be formed without discipline, practice and accountability. There are many different spiritual disciplines or practices that will inform our spiritual life; and there is the gift of spiritual direction that is able to hold one accountable.

In the past 40 years Spiritual Directors have been able to access an ancient yet newly discovered spiritual tool called the Enneagram. While there are many different tools for personal self-discovery, none is quite as powerful and insightful as the Enneagram for the purpose of self transformation. It allows one to view oneself from the aspect of motivation and offers one the tools for greater self-knowing. The Spiritual Director can well use this spiritual discipline in the role of Director to understand and to guide the directee along the journey of spiritual formation.

The entrance into our understanding comes from knowing our own place in the Enneagram and an appreciation for the differences of personalities revealed in this spiritual discipline. This workshop is designed specifically for persons in the role of Spiritual Director, to provide information, insight and clarity into what makes each individual unique before God. Suzanne Stabile is an Enneagram Master who teaches this discipline in the ancient form of oral tradition. Her style is both informative and engaging. You will come away with an in depth understanding of the nine types of personalities found in the Enneagram and a deeper understanding of yourself and your ability to live the spiritual life from the heart – the goal of Spiritual Direction.

The new e-journal Religion and Gender is pleased to announce the publication of its first issue. This volume addresses the theme ‘Critical Issues in the Study of Religion and Gender’ and is free available online.

The next two volumes of the journal will explore the themes ‘Religion, Gender and Multiculturalism’ (Winter 2011) and ‘Masculinities and Religion: Continuities and Change’ (Spring 2012).

Religion and Gender is a refereed, online, open access journal for the systematic study of gender and religion in an interdisciplinary perspective. The journal explores the relation, confrontation and intersection of gender and religion, taking into account the multiple and changing manifestations of religion in diverse social and cultural contexts. It analyses and reflects critically on gender in its interpretative and imaginative dimensions and as a fundamental principle of social ordering. It seeks to investigate gender at the intersection of feminist, sexuality, queer, masculinity and diversity studies.

Religion and Gender is edited by a small team of managing editors, supported by an international editorial board and an advisory board consisting of renowned scholars in the broad field of the study of religion and gender. As an academic journal, Religion and Gender aims to publish high level contributions from the Humanities and from qualitative and conceptual studies in the Social Sciences. It wants to focus in particular on contemporary debates and topics of emerging interest. The editors invite you to submit articles, book reviews, literature surveys of discussion papers, or to propose special issues.

You are encouraged to register at our website as a reader of Religion and Gender. As a registered user you will be notified when new issues of the journal are published. Occasionally you will also receive announcements related to the journal and other items of your interest.

Dr. Stephen V. Sprinkle
Dallas, TX

A faculty member at Fort Worth’s Brite Divinity School, Sprinkle, 60, has been making a difference within the typically impermeable walls of organized religion. An ordained Baptist minister, Sprinkle attended Yale Divinity School and is Brite’s first openly gay scholar. He’s authored two books for Chalice Press, Disciples & Theology and Ordination, as well as reams of articles addressing theology, the Church and queer studies. Sprinkle has also pastored or co-pastored five congregations in Connecticut, Texas and North Carolina (where he was born and raised).

Shocked awake by a “near brush” with anti-gay violence, Sprinkle was inspired to create his website, Unfinished Lives, which he describes as “a place of public discourse which remembers and honors LGBTQ hate-crime victims, while also revealing the reality of unseen violence perpetrated against people whose only ‘offense’ is their sexual orientation, gender identity or gender presentation.”

Asked by the HRC to comment on the passage of 2009’s Matthew Shepard Act, Sprinkle wrote: “The end of the beginning of full equality for my people has come. And we who believe in the fullness of justice will not rest until it comes continue to preach, to pray, and to advocate until all of us our free to love without the threat of violence.”

On September 6, 2011, we announced that we are making journal content in JSTOR published prior to 1923 in the United States and prior to 1870 elsewhere freely available to anyone, anywhere in the world. This “Early Journal Content” includes discourse and scholarship in the arts and humanities, economics and politics, and in mathematics and other sciences. It includes nearly 500,000 articles from more than 200 journals. This represents 6% of the content on JSTOR.

While JSTOR currently provides access to scholarly content to people through a growing network of more than 7,000 institutions in 153 countries, we also know there are independent scholars and other people that we are still not reaching in this way. Making the Early Journal Content freely available is a first step in a larger effort to provide more access options to the content on JSTOR for these individuals. The Early Journal Content will be released on a rolling basis beginning today. A quick video tutorial about how to access this content is also available.

We encourage broad use of the Early Journal Content, including the ability to reuse it for non-commercial purposes. We ask that you acknowledge JSTOR as the source of the content and provide a link back to our site. Please also be considerate of other users and do not use robots or other devices to systematically download these works as this may be disruptive to our systems. For more information, you can read a new section about Early Journal Content in our Terms & Conditions of Use.

If you would like to be notified of the first and subsequent releases of the Early Journal Content, you may follow us on Twitter or Facebook.

You can browse a list of available content by discipline or by title. Please read ourFrequently Asked Questions if you have additional questions about the Early Journal Content or contact us at support[at]jstor[dot]org.

Hello fellow Students, Faculty and Staff,

I hope you will join us this Thursday, October 20th at 11:00 a.m. in Weatherly Hall for the first of four panel discussions about religious practices in multi-faith settings. Our hope is that through learning about practices in Jewish, Muslim, and Christian contexts that each of us will be able to gain a deeper understanding of our own tradition, and a greater sense of hospitality in multi-faith contexts.

Three guest panelists, Imam Moujahed Bakhach, Rev. Melinda Veatch, and Rabbi Ralph Mecklenburger, will present on ‘Blessing Children and Rites of Initiation’ from Muslim, Christian, and Jewish perspectives. There will be time for questions and discussion after the panelists present.

We will be serving a light lunch from Panera, so please RSVP via the Brite homepage link (http://www.brite.edu/register.asp).

I look forward to seeing you this Thursday as we expand our knowledge and build new relationships.

Join us for a series of interfaith panel presentations as we learn about religious practices that are common to Jewish, Christian, and Muslim faith communities. Through engaging and reflecting upon religious practices in these three traditions, participants will gain a deeper understanding of their own practice, and a greater readiness to practice hospitality in interfaith contexts.

Meeting at the Table: Roman Catholic and Disciples Understandings
Saturday, October 29 (9:00 a.m. to 1:45 p.m.)
Catherine Clifford and David Thompson

Presented by: Stalcup School of Theology for the Laity, Brite Divinity School
St. Andrew Catholic Church, 3717 Stadium Drive, Fort Worth, TX

The Eucharist (Lord’s Supper) is central for both Disciples and Roman Catholics, and every phase of the Disciples of Christ-Roman Catholic International Commission for Dialogue has regularly noted this centrality. Through four phases of dialogue beginning in 1977 the historic differences between the two communions have been identified along with many unexpected agreements and a convergence in understandings. This seminar explores the history of the dialogue, the theological understandings of the eucharist in each tradition, and the ongoing discussions surrounding the practice, role and meaning of this sacrament at the heart of our faith. Come and you may learn just how close our understandings truly are.

Catherine Clifford is Associate Professor of Systematic Theology and Vice Dean in the Faculty of Theology at Saint Paul University, Ottawa and founding Director of the Research Centre on “Vatican II and 21st Century Catholicism”. She is a Roman Catholic member of the Anglican-Roman Catholic dialogue of Canada.

David Thompson is Emeritus Professor of Modern Church History in the University of Cambridge and Fellow of Fitzwilliam College. His ecumenical experience ranges from the local and regional to the national and international.

Subject: CFP: “Jewish Spaces, Jewish Places,” Graduate Student Conference, Carleton University, February 2012

Call for Papers:
JEWISH SPACES, JEWISH PLACES
Second Annual Interdisciplinary Graduate Student Conference in Jewish Studies
Max and Tessie Zelikovitz Centre for Jewish Studies, Carleton University, Ottawa
February 9, 2012
Keynote Speaker: Michael Meng, Clemson University

The Zelikovitz Centre for Jewish Studies at Carleton University is proud to announce the second annual interdisciplinary graduate student conference in Jewish Studies, to be held on February 9, 2012.

We invite papers that address the theme of “Jewish Spaces, Jewish Places” from graduate students working on research projects in Jewish Studies in any field or discipline. The conference aims to explore the plurality and diversity of Jewish spaces and places, past and present, and we are particularly interested in papers that focus on the socio-cultural processes of how Jews construct space and/or mark place. Possible themes include:

-processes of making place and performing space
-space, place and identity
-gendered spaces
-diasporic spaces and spaces of migration
-negotiating Jewish and non-Jewish spaces
-spaces of remembrance and commemoration
-Holocaust sites in history and memory
-public spaces and private spaces
-secular spaces and religious spaces
-spaces of community

Dr. Michael Meng, Assistant Professor of History at Clemson University and author of Shattered Spaces: Encountering Jewish Ruins in Postwar Germany and Poland (Harvard University Press, forthcoming, Fall 2011), will present a keynote lecture. Professor Meng’s visit is co-sponsored by the Campus Outreach Lecture Program of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum’s Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies.

This year’s conference will also coincide with a travelling exhibit “Names Instead of Numbers,” which will be hosted by the History Department with the support of the Zelikovitz Centre at Carleton during the month of February. The exhibit highlights the biographies of twenty-two prisoners of the former Dachau concentration camp, drawn from the Dachau Remembrance Book project. The Remembrance Book project is a collaboration of several non-profit organizations to document the biographies of former camp inmates. Students, adults and relatives of former prisoners participated in the project of reconstructing and commemorating prisoners’ life stories.

Papers should be 15-20 minutes long. Please send a 300-word abstract and a brief biography to: zelikovitz.centre. Please also indicate in your proposal if you will be requiring any audio-visual needs for your presentation.

Proposals are due November 10, 2011.

CFP: Powers of the False Symposium

Institut Francais & Cine Lumiere, London, UK May 25th-26th 2012 (dates to be confirmed)

“There is a power inherent in the false: the positive power of ruse, the power to gain a strategic advantage by masking one’s life force.”

(Brian Massumi, REALER THAN REAL, The Simulacrum According to Deleuze and Guattari)

This two-day symposium addresses the complex ethics of the manipulation of real people and events in documentary, fact-fiction hybrid cinema and artists’ moving image. Through close readings and screenings of contemporary and historical films that deliberately falsify actuality, the Powers of the False symposium will ask, can there be an ethic of falsification in the encounter between filmmaker and subject? How can we document something whose truth has many sides or may be inscrutable? Is the act of documenting always inevitably performative? The symposium will also examine instances where the subjects of films have deliberately deceived filmmakers. Inspired by Gilles Deleuze’s theories of minor cinema and his term ‘powers of the false’, the symposium will turn to other philosophers too, to approach its central conceptual and ethical questions, including Levinas’ philosophy of alterity.

Academic research methods regard most filmmaking practices as unethical, particularly documentary filmmaking because of its direct encounter with actuality. The principles of consent for sociological research are anathema to factual film production, because total editorial control can never be given to the subjects. Instead, prior-consent is necessary. Moving image artists tend to disregard contributor consent forms and often freely intervene in the lives of their subjects. The activity of filmmaking is clearly predisposed to manipulation, and film productions inexorably produce alteration and change. Powers of the False looks at filmmaking as a site for performing difference and as a manipulative and coercive agency. When and for what reason is forgery, manipulation and deception conceptually motivated, even ethically necessary? How are we as human subjects changed by filming and by being filmed?

Topics may include:

* Inventing the past and fictionalising the present in the factual film; ethno-fiction.

* Staged events and re-enactments.

* Instances where filmmakers have deliberately delayed, intervened in, or given testimony in legal proceedings, or have broken the law.

* Films that have to come to light as true/false over time; film hoaxes.

* Films where authorship has been shared with, or passed over to, a subject.

* Films where the subject has manipulated the filmmaker.

* Films that have significantly altered personal or historical events, whether positively or negatively.

* Directionless films guided by an encounter with a subject.

* The docudrama, the drama-documentary, the mock-documentary and the cinematic essay.

* Iterations o…

Greetings to you from Charlottesville. Attached is a CFP for a graduate student colloquium that may be of interest to your graduate students. The theme – Democratic Piety? Theology and Ethics in a Post-Secular Age – promises much, and we are happy to welcome John Bowlin from Princeton and Jennifer Herdt from Yale as plenary speakers alongside our own Chuck Mathewes. Graduate students will be given the chance to present original research on panels moderated by senior UVA faculty and hear from leaders in the field of political theology and theological ethics. In addition to the CFP, there is a modest website here:www.democraticpiety.wordpress.com.

I’d be grateful if you would pass this along to any interested parties.

Call for Papers for THE ART OF GENDER IN EVERYDAY LIFE IX

A multidisciplinary conference, The Art of Gender in Everyday Life IX, will take place at Idaho State University on Wednesday, March 7 through Friday, March 9, 2012.

Gender is not a given. Its meaning and significance are constantly in flux.

This conference will explore the various ways in which gender is crafted, celebrated, endured, deciphered, expressed or, in short, the art of how it is lived on a daily basis.

The conference will include, in addition to other gender-related events and workshops: a keynote address on Friday evening by Stephanie Coontz, Professor of History and Family Studies at The Evergreen State College, Olympia WA; a Friday lunchtime talk by an ISU faculty member; and a screening of LUNAFEST.

A formal call for papers, an announcement of our student paper competition, and a registration form can be found on our website at http://www.isu.edu/andersoncenter. Abstracts must be postmarked by Tuesday, November 1, 2011.

Call for Artists for MAMA SAID: The Artworks and Artifacts of Wise Women

Whether your mama, like the Shirelles’ moms, warned you that there’d be days like this, or whether she, like LL Cool J’s mom, advised you to knock out your competition, we’re sure that she had some wise words for you. During Women’s History Month 2012, we invite you to help us celebrate the wisdom that your mama (or other woman you admire) shared with you. Tell us her story and send us a visual representation (artwork – hers or yours; an object, piece of clothing or other possession of hers; etc.) that we can display.

The Women’s History Month (WHM) Committee at Idaho State University (ISU) is calling for submissions for MAMA SAID: The Artworks and Artifacts of Wise Women to be on exhibit at the Transition Gallery on the ISU campus, February 27 – March 10, 2012, in recognition of National Women’s History Month.

A formal call for artists can be found on our website at http://www.isu.edu/andersoncenter.

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: January 9, 2012

For further information, please contact the Anderson Center via phone (208-282-2805) or email gndrctr.

Philosophy and/as Biopolitics

EPTC Incubator Workshop—Philosophy and/as Biopolitics

The Society for Existential and Phenomenological Theory and Culture (EPTC) is looking for submissions for the Second ETPC Incubator. This event will be a collaborative workshop with presentations of work-in-progress as well as paper presentations on this year’s theme: Philosophy and/as Biopolitics.

Some of the most important thinkers from the past century and many of the most innovative philosophers working today have been focused on the rather diffuse question of biopolitics. While the very meaning of this term may remain open to interpretation, it is nevertheless becoming one of the most important philosophical horizons moving into the twenty-first century. What is biopolitics? Looking back on the past century, why is it possible to count so many philosophers as biopolitical thinkers? Which issues and problems can biopolitics address? And what does the turn to biopolitics mean for philosophy as it advances into the next millennium?

Discussion may involve theoretical questions or applied work. Possible figures for consideration include Foucault, Agamben, Arendt, Derrida, Deleuze, Hardt, Negri, Haraway, Nancy, Butler, Schmitt, Rancière, Habermas, Zizek, Grosz, and Nikolas Rose.

This workshop lets presenters bring problems, questions, and concerns about work-in-progress for discussion in a roundtable setting. It is appropriate to bring a project in its nascent stages, specific passages of a work that are causing difficulties or trouble for the author, or work that is at a crossroad and requires more reflection before it can advance. Suitable projects may include journal articles, book chapters, conference papers, lectures, or perhaps doctoral thesis work. Our aim is to incubate and nurture these projects so participants can take them to the next level. The WIP sessions will be bookended by two formal paper presentations to situate and inspire the conversation.

The workshop will be conducted during EPTC’s annual meeting at Canadian Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences, which will be held May 29 –June 1, 2012 in Waterloo, ON.

We seek two types of work:

i) Work in Progress

- 500-750 word proposal outlining the project you would present at the workshop

- 10-15 minute presentation will be followed by 30-minute roundtable discussion

ii) Conference papers

- 4500 word maximum, plus 150-word abstract

- 30 minute paper will be followed by a brief commentary and 20-minute discussion period

** Please prepare submissions for anonymous review in Word format. On a separate sheet include the title of project, author name, institutional affiliation, and contact information.

Note that the workshop will be open so that all conference delegates can take part. Short précis (approx. 500 words) prepared by participants will be made available on the EPTC/TCEP web site prior to the event. It is preferred that participants discuss their projects extemporaneously so conversation remains colloquial and collegial.

Deadline: January 15, 2012

Submissions and/or questions should be sent to Bronwyn Singleton (bronwynsingleton)

*CALL FOR PAPERS*

The editorial team extends a cordial call for original, unpublished papers investigating the link between religion and time. Ours has been described as a society suffering from space-time compression, a state in which ‘time passes us by’ and we are forever ‘running out of time’ as global capitalism speeds up the pace of life. Closely related to this, some might argue, time plays a key role in many of our anxieties – in the ‘panicked nature’ of reactions to perceived emergencies, in which action is constantly required now, lest delay bring disaster, or in the nervous approach of December 2012 and the end of the Mayan calendar. As a cultural element, religion is not immune to these influences, as we observe with the eschatological guessing-game of some Christian groups. But how are religion and time related in a given context, and how can we extend our analysis beyond the modern day?

We welcome articles that address the relation between religion and time in the contexts of geography, psychology, history, anthropology, gender studies, philosophy, political science, cultural studies and sociology, as well as those which extend the subject across historical and geographical boundaries.

TOPICS

The following sub-fields have been designed to allow for a flexible interpretation of this volume’s theme, as well as to encourage submissions reflecting a broad spectrum of interests and disciplines. The editorial team gladly welcomes applications which fall outside of these parameters:

• Religious seasons, calendars, liturgical time and holy days
• Ritual and time
• Time in literature, scripture, narrative and oral histories
• Foundational, mythic and eschatological discourses
• The ‘end times’
• Eternity and afterlife; time cycles
• Philosophies of time and temporalities
• Telescoping and collapsing time
• Prophetic time and constructions of the future

Articles written in clear, grammatical, and fluent English or French will be considered. Articles should not exceed 25 pages in length. The deadline for submissions is Friday, 28 October, 2011.

Articles should be submitted by email to Rebekka King (rebekka.king@utoronto.ca).
